What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to bring a more youthful appearance by restoring volume or fullness to the face and lips. They work by reducing or eliminating lines, wrinkles and folds in the skin and the effect is seen immediately after treatment.
As skin ages, both naturally and because of other factors such as sun damage, smoking, and poor diet, we lose collagen, fat and other natural moisturising substances from our skin. These can be thought of as the natural ‘scaffolding’ that keeps it looking young and feeling firm. With less of these, our skin becomes thinner and we start to see lines, wrinkles and folds developing. This is usually more noticeable on our faces.
At Spire Dental safety and natural cosmetic result is no 1; therefore we only use dermal fillers that:
- Provide an advanced cosmetic result
- body breaks down naturally after a significant period of time (min 6 months)
- does not require skin testing
- have a superior safety profile.
What are dermal fillers used for?
- Softening and erasing lines and wrinkles
- Lip enhancement and definition
- Nose to mouth lines
- Mouth corners
- Cheek enhancement
- Nose correction
- Chin enhancement
- Brow lift
- Replace soft-tissue volume loss
- Scar correction
Put simply, dermal fillers are used to restore that lost volume in the face by plumping out lines, wrinkles and folds. Various kinds of safe, natural and man-made materials are used as dermal fillers; these have been specifically developed over the years for use in the skin.
At Spire Dental we use both Restylane and Emerval, both are injectable hyaluronic gels that is used to address different types and severities of wrinkles and lip remodeling. Restylane and Emerval dermal fillers has a proven track record based on twenty years of research and is suitable for all skin types requiring no pre treatment skin testing. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in skin and works to trap water and maintain the intercellular space within the dermis. As our skin ages, hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin are gradually lost from the dermis. The end result is volume loss, skin laxity, and wrinkles Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Emervel are used to replenish the dermal volume loss that allows wrinkles to form. It is also used to enhance lips and fill in acne scars. Because there are minimally modified, both dermal fillers have a low incidence of hypersensitivity reactions and requires no skin testing prior to treatment. The chemically stabilized hyaluronic acid found in Restylane can remain in the dermis up to one year. This is significantly longer than the collagen based dermal fillers.
The procedure
The clear gel is injected using a fine needle. It is injected into the skin below the wrinkle and lifts the wrinkle out to the desired correction. Restylane or Emervel is injected directly into and around the lip for lip enhancements. Topical or local aesthetic is used to anesthetize the injection sites. Once injected, the dermal filler integrates into the skin and binds with water.
The results are visible immediately and will last between six and nine months depending on age, skin type and treatment required.
Over time, Restylane and Emervel is gradually reabsorbed without a trace. For this reason, follow up treatments are needed to maintain your results at 6 to 12 month intervals. The amount of Dermal filler used during your treatment depends on the desired correction.
